Yapımcılığını Steven Spielberg'in üstlendiği Into the West, büyük bütçeli bir tarihi dizi.

Jacob Wheeler, kafasını maceraya takmış, tekerlek ustası bir aileden gelen Virginia'lı bir gençtir. Bu tutkusu yüzünden ailesini terk edip,
ünlü dağ adamı Jedediah Smith ve adamlarıyla birlikte California'ya doğru yola çıkar.
Çıktığı bu yolculuk ona birçok yeni şey öğretir ve bu sayede bambaşka biri olur.

"Bizonun Sevdiği" adlı genç bir Lakota din adamı, beyazların gelişi ve bizonların soyunun tükenmesiyle ilgili rahatsız edici hayaller görmektedir. Kız kardeşi "Gök Gürültüsü Kalpli Kadın"ın başı derde girince Jacob tarafından kurtarılıyor ve iki ailenin kaderi ebediyen birleşiyor.

Batı'ya göç, altına hücum, demiryolları rekabeti, Hayalet Dansı, Wounded Knee Katliamı gibi olayları ele alan Into the West,
kızılderili ırkının yokoluş eşiğine gelişinin en tarafsız hikâyesi.

1825-1890 arasını anlatan dizinin aynı zamanda muazzam bir oyuncu kadrosu var. Yapımcılar karakterleri makyajla yaşlandırmayı tercih etmedikleri için bazen aynı karakteri 3-4 kişinin canlandırdığına tanık oluyoruz.

Into the West'e esin kaynağı olan filmlerden bazıları: How the West Was Won, The Iron Horse, The Big Trail,
Westward the Women, The Searchers ve Dances with Wolves.

Dizi, ikişer saatlik altı bölümden oluşuyor.
